An Absorbent Made From Coconuts?

You have probably seen the word “coir (pronounced COY-er),” but might not know exactly what this product is. It is the rough material that natural rugs, doormats, ropes, and the liners of those hanging plant baskets at your local nursery are made of. This extremely effective fiber is also utilized in the manufacturing of brushes, upholstery stuffing — and even EcoPro Solutions’ CoirLoc™ all-natural, organic absorbent granules. If you are looking for absorbents online, we are excited to tell you about this amazing and versatile material and how it makes for a superior universal absorbent!

The Greenest Absorbent

You can buy a host of different absorbents online or from wholesale distributors. There is certainly no shortage of absorbent granular choices made from a variety of materials. However, none are as safe, environmentally friendly, and effective as CoirLoc™.

This is because CoirLoc™ is made from an entirely renewable resource: coconuts — specifically the plentiful husks of the coconut that protects the fruit you see on your grocery store shelves. To get to the husk, the exterior peel of the coconut is cut, and the husk surrounding the fruit can be extracted. These husks are hard and somewhat solid when first extracted, but the fibers loosen when soaked in water. Once loose, the longer coir fibers are made into items such as brooms or rugs, and the smaller ones can be used for applications like furniture stuffing — or CoirLoc™.

Contrast an all-natural fiber product to the mined clay or chemicals that are the active ingredients in most absorbents available today. Coconuts are not only non-toxic (ours are grown without chemical fertilizers), they are also more easily harvested and renewable, eliminating mining and milling. Coir absorbents also remove the destructive impact on the environment caused by the production of other absorbents. In fact, it was the demand for greener alternatives to traditional absorbent materials that led to the creation of coir-based products that could safely and completely clean up spills.

An advantageous feature of coir is that it maintains its structural integrity where other natural materials may rot. Coir is an absorbent because its individual fiber cells have microscopic hollow channel structures with thick walls made of cellulose. This characteristic also helps coir to soak up and encapsulate liquids such as hydrocarbons (gas or oil) for an extensive period of time and prevents leaching.

Importantly, silica-free CoirLoc™, unlike chemical or clay absorbents, does not produce irritating dust when dispersed. CoirLoc™ contains no hazardous materials. It is non-flammable, stable, non-reactive, and contains nothing that can harm the environment.

CoirLoc™ is safe and extremely effective at absorbing dangerous industrial spills such as acids, fuels, oils, resin, polymer blood, vomit, coolant, etc. while suppressing vapors and odors, and CoirLoc™ has the unique ability to separate hydrocarbons from water. We think you will agree that it is the absorbent material of choice.

A “Twisted” Tale

We would love to take credit for discovering ingenious coir, but we cannot. Its history actually dates back to ancient times. The word “coir” comes from the Malayalam word “kayar,” which means “to be twisted.” The first documentation of coir took place in the first century A.D., when a Greek sailor wrote about an East African village whose boatmakers spun the twine from coir fibers to sew together the boards that made up the hull of the vessel.

CoirLoc™ is a must-have for any spill kit in workplaces where chemical or other fluid spills are a risk. CoirLoc™ is ideal for industrial spill kits, schools, hospitals, gas stations, water treatment plants, transportation, and EH&S applications. Select CoirLoc™ for your business. It is the most environmentally-friendly, worker-safe, and effective spill absorbent on the market.
